Making wire jewelry can be hard for beginners. Making wire wrapped cross can be very challenging and it can also train you to go the next level of jewelry making.
Materials
- 6 inch piece of 18ga or 16ga round, choose the soft wire for frame
- Round nose pliers
- 12 inch of 16ga half hard, half round
- Chain or square nose pliers
- Chasing hammer
- Wire cutter
- Ruler
- Small file
- Marker
- Steel block or anvil
The Making Steps
- Prepare wire by cutting the 6 inch of soft wire, and then straighten it.
- Use your round nose pliers to fold the wire in half, and do not make it too small.
- After you have folded the wire, make a loop out of it at the halfway point.
- Using your ruler, measure more or less 5 or 8 inch from the loop, and mark it using the marker. Then, bend each side of the wire with 90 degrees using square or chain nose pliers.
- Then again, measure the right side of the wire using the ruler for more or less 5 or 8 inch and mark it using the marker. After that, bend the wire using the round nose pliers.
- Measure it again using the ruler with the same length. After that, bend the wire again with 90 degrees using the square or chain nose pliers.
- Use your round nose pliers to make a loop to form the cross.
- Bend the wire again to form the “leg” of the cross using the square or chain nose pliers.
- After it has been shaped like the cross, lay it on the steel block, and fatten each loop using the hammer. For the rest of the cross, hammer it lightly so it will not so flatten.
- Do not forget to flatten the end of the cross itself.
- Cut 3 pieces of 2 to 4 inch wire and use them to wrap the cross on “arms”, “legs”, and “neck”.
- Place the “neck” of the cross above the 12 inch of the half round wire.
- Make a loop using the half round wire in the “neck”
- Then, bring the wire to the back of the cross and loop the excessive wire in the “arms” and “neck” of the cross.
- Add the ring on the upper loop. Then, your wire wrapped cross is ready to be attached to your necklace or bracelet or even your keychain.
